10 Huge Rock Albums That Didn't Deserve To Flop
5. The King of Limbs - Radiohead
If there's one band that critics have a soft spot for more than anybody, it's Radiohead. Ever since the days of OK Computer, these British rockers have made some of the most buzzed about releases in the rock scene, from the moment they switched to electronic on Kid A to when they gave their album away for free with In Rainbows. They've never gone astray or tried to follow the trends of the time that much, so why do people still have the same bone to pick with The King of Limbs?
Granted, it's not hard to see why some people were upset. Looking to get out of their normal way of writing songs, the entire project seems to go for a much more groove centric atmosphere than most of their material, making for songs that feel almost hypnotic once you start to settle in. There's a fine line between sounding hypnotic and sounding like you're on autopilot though, and this was apparently way too much for most fans to really take in.
For most of their career, this is seen as probably the band's lowest reception since Pablo Honey, but the actual songs on here are still up to Radiohead's level. At just 8 tracks, they make every one of them count, like the opener Bloom getting you sucked into the world of loops while also finding time to incorporate the more subdued parts of their sound on Codex. If anything else, the Live from the Basement sessions for these songs just show you that Radiohead were by no means lacking when it came to writing brilliant material. They just had some bugs to work out this time around.
