10 Iconic Rock Stars' Guitars

7. Jimmy Page - Gibson Double Neck

There are, admittedly, two genuine contenders for the Jimmy Page iconic guitar title: the sunburst Les Paul and the Gibson double-neck. The double-neck takes it by a whisker as it is so unique to Page. Other guitarists dabbled with it but it became instantly identifiable with the all time guitar shop 'no go', 'Stairway To Heaven'. Page needed to be able to cover 6 and 12 string duties live and the double-neck was a no brainer.

There are surprisingly few double-necked guitars available, perhaps because whilst it does offer a handy solution to the 6/12 string problem, it is a pretty hefty, bulky instrument and is also fairly low in the rock'n'roll cool stakes. Having said that, the other Page-favoured guitar was a Les Paul. Some may not realise that Led Zep 1 was actually recorded on a Fender Telecaster, which again proves that a lot of what the player sounds like derives from the man himself rather than the instrument.

For someone wanting to buy an actual Gibson double-neck, a super-healthy bank account is an essential. A lot of the 6/12 vibe is captured by some of the cheaper copies that go for about £500, so for most of us, that is probably the closest we're going to get to recreating Zep at Knebworth!
