10 Iconic Rock Stars' Guitars

3. Angus Young - Gibson SG

Much like Brian May on this list, Angus Young has only ever been pictured playing the one model of guitar, the Gibson SG. Again like May, it would seem totally bizarre to see him playing anything else - Angus with a Strat, Les Paul or Flying V would just be so wrong. One of the most revered rock guitarists of all time, Angus has made a virtue of using essentially the same kind of sound throughout his decades at the top.

Many have tried to cop the unique Angus tone, but often make the mistake of overloading the gain and distortion, whereas Young actually uses a much cleaner sound than one would imagine for rock and metal. Like his brother Malcolm, Angus understood that too much overload and distortion compressed the sound and actually made the guitars sound smaller. A common mistake in trying to replicate the gritty rhythm parts of the AC/DC classics is using an over saturated sound.

There have actually been a number of Gibson signature Angus Young models over the years, although Young himself has continued to use a handful of older production line models. Incidentally, Malcolm used a guitar for his bone-crunching rhythm parts that is almost unheard of in rock and metal: a Gretsch.
