10 Incredible Songs From Musicians Who Knew They Were Dying
5. Keep Me In Your Heart - Warren Zevon
"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less: Keep me in your heart for a while."
Zevon was an American folk rock singer whose success peaked in the late '70s following the release of his third studio album Excitable Boy.
Known for his macabre sense of humour whilst tackling tough political topics, Zevon continued his career facing both personal and professional slumps but would always face these obstacles at face value and recover, including overcoming several addiction relapses and striking close friendships with David Letterman and Billy Bob Thornton.
In August 2003, two weeks before he passed away, Zevon released his final studio album The Wind. Of the eleven tracks featured on the album, only two of them were written after learning that he had terminal lung cancer - a cover of Bob Dylan's Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and Keep Me In Your Heart.
The latter represents a stark contrast to Zevon's noted humour, instead offering an earnest request to his fans and his family to remember him after his passing. Zevon intentionally left Keep Me In Your Heart to last for recording, wanting his final farewell to be wearing his heart on his sleeve, going so far as to set up a makeshift recording booth in his home after becoming too ill to travel.
