3. Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
“A Coldplay concept album” is a phrase only slightly more desirable than “Mormon concept album”. Nobody listens to Coldplay for the lyrics (and many people don’t listen to them for that reason), so you can imagine the collective shudder when the band announced that their fifth album Mylo Xyloto was a “rock opera”. The plot is, predictably, both overwrought and indecipherable.
Ready? Okay, deep breath: the totalitarian government of “Silencia”, led by “Major Minus”, employs troops known as “Silencers” to wage a war on sound and colour, in order to starve creatures known as “Feeders”. Nope we’re not done: one of these Silencers, called Mylo, is tasked with hunting down “Sparkers”, people who harness light and energy to graffiti in bright colours. There’s also a gang of “Car Kids”, who may or may not be the same as a group of rapscallions called “The Lost Boys”, who get up to rebellious but life-affirming antics.
