10 Insane Stories Behind Classic Albums
9. Station to Station - David Bowie
For as much of a hassle as some albums can seem at times, at least you can remember the good stuff. Even if playing through the same song over and over again may seem like a hassle, you can still look back and laugh at the more innocent days in the studio. You would normally...if your name wasn't David Bowie.
In the midst of changing sounds at the end of the '70s, the Starman's Station to Station is a brilliant record, firmly burying the glam period and launching Bowie into his art rock phase. If you had asked him about it though, Bowie wasn't actually able to remember a single thing about these sessions. Making the album more or less concurrently with the film the Man Who Fell to Earth, Bowie's portrayal of the Thin White Duke was really starting to take a toll on his health. Shrinking to a pencil thin physique, Bowie was known to be on a diet of peppers, milk, and cocaine throughout the process of making this record.
While the details behind the record were pretty dire, Bowie turns that chaos into gold on Station to Station, with some of his most celebrated songs like Golden Years and the title track. This was just the start of something else though. We still had Low and Heroes to look out for right around the corner.
