10 Killer Rock Music Bands With No Guitarist
7. The HU
The Who may be famous for Pete Townshend's distinctive aggressive-melodic guitar phrasing and his penchant for destroying his instrument when the gig was up; The HU are not.
Hailing from Mongolia, these folk rockers stormed the rock and metal scene around the middle of the last decade, gifting the genre a whole new dimension that ditches not just the six-string but other typical rock instruments like bass, keys, synth and cow bell in favour of traditional instruments like the morin khuur (a bowed horsehead fiddle with two strings) and tumur khuur (a variation of the jaw harp).
And yet, these facts are not even the most interesting part of the group's act, as each member of the four-piece is a talented throat singer, blending traditional baritone vocals with a sound usually heard in the hills of Tuva and Mongolia. While this deep, epic throat-singing rivals any rocker's growl, it also acts as a platform for a more complex and nuanced vocal performance filling the gaps between the strings, like the midpoint between Lemmy and a digeridoo.
