10 Killer Rock Music Bands With No Guitarist
5. Twenty One Pilots
It's difficult to quantify precisely what Twenty One Pilots are, or what genre of music they actually make; what's for certain is that it's some kind of big, small, stripped back, over-the-top, stadium, indie rock. They use rap, poetry, hip-hop elements, performance and conceptual art, and yet somehow still appeal to the masses with a surprisingly radio-friendly sound.
A simple and straightforward duo (despite the evidence of their musical output), Josh Dun plays drums and singer Tyler Joseph is the resident keys, bass and ukulele man, as often seen laden with various instruments as he is out on stage with only a mic, a balaclava and a good rhyme. But the band lacks a guitarist, filling up most of the sonic space with an eclectic mix of raps, beats and melodies from an array of electronic and acoustic sources.
While some of Twenty One Pilots' most recent songs have begun to incorporate elements of guitar, they still don't have a resident axe man on the team. And, given how much they manage to squeeze out of a two-man setup, let's hope things stay that way.
