10 Legendary Concept Records Of The 2010's
5. Because the Internet - Childish Gambino
For the past few years, Donald Glover has practically become a renaissance man in the world of entertainment. Even though the work he does under Childish Gambino could be more than enough to sustain a career, it's just one of the many hustles that he's got going on, from his work as an actor in the Lion King to when he was working as a comedian all the way back on Community. So it was only natural that Donald actually try to put all of his creative endeavors under one roof with Because the Internet.
Because this album is more than just a collection of songs. During the promotional cycle for the entire record, you actually got a prototype screenplay for what was intended to be a short film detailing the plot of the story, with a character named The Boy picking up from the song That Power off of Camp and going on a wild adventure, from going to clubs to having to deal with the emotional trauma of losing his father and disposing of the ashes.
Since the final screenplay never actually got made, you can hear the messiness on the record, as Donald goes from the kind of pop rap that he loves on 3005 to the more ambient tracks that were supposed to soundtrack certain spots in the film. Then again, maybe it doesn't mean anything at all at the end. After all, life is the biggest troll in this kid's eyes, and this whole album is practically the entire mess of life sprawled out for just under an hour.
