10 Legendary Musicians That Play Multiple Instruments
8. Mike Shinoda - Linkin Park
With years removed since Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park have always felt like more than just a band. Considering how much input they have into every single thing they make, the whole project just seems like a creative collective that's looking to make music as a means to get their ideas out. While DJ Joe Hahn might have an ambition that extends far beyond just music, Mike Shinoda is still interested in seeing just how many instruments he can tackle.
When bursting onto the scene with Papercut, Mike was pretty much just the rapper of the group, having just the kind of angsty charisma to play off Chester Bennington's screams. As the '00s wore on, rap rock was starting to go out of style, and Mike started to pick up even more roles in the band, from manning the keyboards most of the time to playing rhythm guitar behind Brad Delson.
It's not like Mike couldn't sing cleanly either, eventually leading entire songs by himself like In Between off of Minutes to Midnight. As the band evolved over time, Mike also found himself in the producer's chair a lot of the time, steering recording sessions in the right direction and acting as the de facto coach whenever they went into the studio, all while keeping his chops up on every instrument. It's up in the air where Linkin Park will go these days without Chester, but Mike may just be able to bring the band back from the edge.
