10 Legendary Rock Albums That Were Produced Terribly

8. Damaged - Black Flag

Punk as a genre is not really meant to be the most technically produced thing in the world. Hell, if you picked up an album by the Ramones and got something that sounded like it had the same production value as a Journey record, you know that you're in for a pretty big problem. That's just your traditional punk though...wait until you have a listen to what the hardcore style of punk had in store.

Though the underground punk scene has never been known for its production values, Black Flag's debut is still one of the most jarring listening experiences you will ever have if you're not accustomed to it. In between all of the screaming from Henry Rollins, the music itself sounds like it may as well have been recorded in a trash can, as Greg Ginn squeezes the life out of his guitar on every single lead break. Then again, it might be those little blemishes in the recording that actually make this record perfect.

While this had the same kind of DIY aesthetic as someone like the Ramones, the attitude was a lot more vicious, and hearing Henry Rollins shriek like this was more than just punk kids making a noise. This was the kind of music meant to scare you to death if you weren't careful, and Black Flag would use the rest of their career capitalizing on that kind of darkness.
