10 Legendary Rock Songs That Feature Weird Instruments
9. Jenny Wren - Paul McCartney
Towards the beginning of the '00s, Paul McCartney didn't really need to keep up his creative streak like he did back in the '60s. The man had already given us some of the most beautiful melodies ever written, and here he is continuing to push himself creatively with Nigel Godrich on Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. And right in the middle of one of the more delicate songs, he managed to slip in that one little musical piece that we've never heard before.
For most of Jenny Wren, this is the kind of solo acoustic song that most of us are used to, being in the vein of something that could have come off of the White Album like I Will or Blackbird. Whereas both of those songs feature Macca just plucking away at the guitar, we get a strange sonic detour by featuring a solo from the duduk, an Armenian woodwind instrument that doesn't really get a ton of prominence in any form of Western music.
Though it takes a second to realign yourself when you hear it in the mix, it really fits the mood that the song is going for, like you're watching a montage of all of the different major events going on in Jenny's life before Paul comes back in with his more delicate voice. After over half a century making music, it's nice to know that Paul is still looking for sounds that he's never heard before with every single song he writes.
