10 Legendary Songs That Almost Weren't Released
2. The Masterplan - Oasis
Every so often, an artist reaches a point in their songwriting where they just can't go wrong. Instead of finding a few perfect songs on every record, there just comes a point where you've refined your craft so much that everything hits a peak at one time. In the case of Noel Gallagher, even the B-sides for Oasis albums turned into some of the most celebrated rock songs of the modern age.
As work began on What's the Story Morning Glory?, Gallagher was coming to the end of recording before being told that he needed a B-side for the single version of Wonderwall. Going into the studio with an acoustic guitar, The Masterplan turned into one of the most extravagant Oasis songs ever created, complete with a full orchestra and one of the most heartfelt vocal performances Noel had ever given.
In fact, the quality of the song very nearly hurt its potential when eventually being released, with the record label going so far as to argue that it can't be a B-side because it was too good. Though Noel stuck to his guns by releasing it as a B-side, the staying power of the tune was so great that he almost considered releasing it as a single by itself.
Regardless of where it might fall in Oasis' discography, this is still one of the most essential pieces of music to ever comes from these lads from Manchester.
