10 Legendary Songs That Were Completely Improvised
4. Creep - Radiohead
Pretty much half of Radiohead's career has been an attempt to outrun the shadow of Creep. Though it's always nice to have a hit, the back catalog of these alternative legends is a lot more than just their little post grunge hit from back in 1993. And even when they were tracking the song in the studio, Jonny Greenwood wasn't that fond of the song to begin with.
When making Pablo Honey, Creep wasn't even one of the contenders to make the record, let alone the lead single. As the record executives looked at the material though, they insisted that they record it for the album, much to the band's frustration. Once they actually made their way into the studio, Jonny was still not happy to record this song, and did everything he could to sabotage the recording in some way, like turning his amp up too loud and scraping at his strings in between the verses.
The sabotage kind of backfired though, since those scratches became the iconic thing that most people think of when they hear this song nowadays. In the wake of this one killer track, Radiohead would end up moving in a much more artsy direction, looking to expand the perimeters of what rock and roll was supposed to be at the time. These guys have become some of the greatest innovators in music today, and it all started from Jonny being petty about having to play this song.
