10 Love Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark
5. True Love Waits - Radiohead
No one in their right mind is going to be listening to a band like Radiohead to have their spirits lifted or anything. Throughout every version of the band, Thom Yorke's lyrics combined with the melancholy music is enough to get some standard rock fans to burst into tears if they aren't careful. True Love Waits always fell into that category since it became a live staple, but the greatest gut punch was the circumstances under which we got the finished version.
For all of the cohesiveness of a Moon Shaped Pool, a lot of the songs were actually leftovers from earlier sessions, with songs like Burn the Witch dating all the way back to the days of Kid A. During the recording though, Thom had also split up from his wife, who also died a few months after their separation. If anything, the whole album feels more like an album of mourning than anything else, with True Love Waits serving as the final plea that Thom has to keep his relationship going.
Trading in the acoustic guitar for a echo-soaked piano, it almost feels like you're waking up from a dream when you hear it, as Thom talks about doing whatever he can for his partner so long as she doesn't leave his side. In the real world though, things are telling a different story. As much as this seems like one last love song, we all know that this story doesn't have a happy ending.
