10 Manic Street Preachers Hidden Gem Songs
6. 4 Ever Delayed
The other "new" track from Lipstick Traces, as the title suggests, was actually recorded for the previous year's Forever Delayed hits compilation. It is, in your humble writer's opinion, a far better song than that album's single and it was a baffling decision to not release it.
Much like Door To The River and 1985, this is the band in a melancholy mood. The title references a line from their earlier single, Roses In The Hospital, but also clearly brings to mind Richey's disappearance and the idea that the band will never forget him or be the same without him. A feeling that has no doubt tainted their lives and any successes they have enjoyed in the years since.
It's a shame that this and the previous two tracks were tucked away on compilations as it minimises their power and gives the impression that they're lesser products. This song in particular is a fine example of how much James' vocal delivery can add meaning to Nicky's sometimes opaque lyrics. You might not always know what the hell he's talking about, but you know he means it.
