10 Masterpiece Albums Everyone Ignored

8. Caress of Steel - Rush

Over the years, Rush have become one of the most enduring cult bands to ever come out of rock's golden age. Even though they started out as a carbon copy of Led Zeppelin, their experimentation with different time signatures and grand tales in their songs helped birth the prog rock movement as we know it. Whereas most bands have to work to get their fullest potential, not many acts have their best and worst selling albums side by side in their discography.

Long before 2112 really set the world on fire, Rush's first dip into more grandiose waters resulted in Caress of Steel, which many accused of being too much too soon. Though their previous album Fly By Night had more prog-heavy material like By Tor and the Snow Dog, the idea of having two songs of prog journeys (with one breaching the 20 minute mark) was too much for fans to digest.

Upon further inspection though, this is one of the more adventurous undertakings this power trio would ever take on, with Bastille Day holding up as one of the greatest opening tracks they've ever made. Even with their long lengths, the more epic cuts are also solid, complete with references to Lord of the Rings and a wise tale about one man's journey to find a fountain. Caress of Steel may have culminated in what the band calls the "Down the Tubes" tour, but it is certainly underrated all the same.
