10 Masterpiece Albums Everyone Ignored

7. Apple - Mother Love Bone

At the start of the '90s, change was in the air for the next stage of rock. After hair metal had started to embarrass itself with bands like Winger and Stryper, there were a few noticeable shifts happening in the underground, with one band after another taking on a more authentic form of rock and roll. On the other hand, if there was any band who deserved to reach for the gold, it was Mother Love Bone.

While Nirvana really set the grunge wave on fire with Smells Like Teen Spirit, Mother Love Bone's initial rumblings with Apple proved that they were worthy of being the next heavy hitters. Even though the sound is still in the vein of other hair metal bands at the time, there was also an arena rock groove and even a funky soul to their tunes that put them on par with acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, along with having an amazing frontman in Andy Wood.

So why did this kind of album go unnoticed? Instead of reaching for the top of the charts, Apple ended up being an unintentional epitaph after Wood passed away a few days before its release after overdosing on heroin. The rest of the band did end up finding a new life with Eddie Vedder in Pearl Jam, but in terms of the raw talent of the Seattle scene, this is the kind of music that grunge should have sounded like.
