10 Masterpiece Albums Everyone Ignored

5. Sam's Town - The Killers

Most '00s music fans can tell you where they were the first time they heard Hot Fuss by the Killers. Arriving right smack in the middle of the garage rock revival, this glittery pastiche of the glory years of the '80s gave us some of the most timeless hits of the modern age, from Mr. Brightside to Somebody Told Me. However, it's when you get to the follow-up Sam's Town that things start to get a bit dicey.

When going on tour to promote it, Flowers had talked the album up in interviews, thinking that it was one of the best albums that he had ever heard at the time. Even though there's no shame in being proud of your work, this kind of backfired on them, as everyone started to expect the new record to be the next Abbey Road. While, no, this is not an instant classic or even Hot Fuss Pt. 2, it might just be the best record the band have ever made.

Rather than rest on their laurels, Sam's Town is drenched in the wonderment of Americana, with songs like When You Were Young and Read My Mind feeling like they could be prime Springsteen cuts from the '70s. As opposed to the glittery sounds of their debut, Sam's Town is the sound of the Killers finding their strengths and running with it, which they would explore more on later records. So next time you start going through your '00s playlist, add a few of these deep cuts and see what you've been missing out on.
