10 Masterpiece Albums Everyone Ignored

4. Creatures of the Night - KISS

KISS really felt like they were on life support at the turn of the '70s. After absolutely dominating the rock landscape with their amazing live shows and down and dirty rock and roll, the fame and success turned them into a sideshow quickly, complete with songs that were a lot more serious and a lot less fun. Even though the downward spiral was pretty much solidified, these make-up clad rockers delivered a stunning performance on Creatures of the Night.

Across this record, it feels like Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have finally figured out how to rock again, with songs like the title track and I Love It Loud having a metallic smack courtesy of new drummer Eric Carr. Whereas most of the group's previous output was nothing but cliched '70s cheese looking to get on the charts, this was like watching rock's almighty superheroes levelling up before your eyes.

However, not even the most savage of riffs translated to sales. After being burned by the previous concept album Music from the Elder, no one really wanted to have anything to do with these guys anymore. The lack of units sold from this record eventually led to the guys reinventing themselves as a glam rock band and taking off their trademark makeup. While there are some saving graces amidst KISS's '80s period, it's a wonder what the next decade would have sounded like if they had songs like this as their foundation.
