10 Metal Bands That Went Acoustic
2. Circle - Slipknot
For years, Corey Taylor has made fun of the more mellow version of the Slipknot audience as the "Snuff" crowd. As much as some Maggots want to get down with something like Wait and Bleed or Psychosocial, this little acoustic track from All Hope is Gone is what made those casual rock fans around the world like this heavy metal monstrosity with 9 masked maniacs. Though most people got their start here, the acoustic side had been building up ever since Vol. III on Circle.
Being one of the first gigantic departures from Slipknot's earlier sound, it's no wonder why something like this might have caused up a stir with those who got started with Slipknot. Why the hell would you want a ballad from a band that looks like they could kill you and eat your flesh? It couldn't happen...it shouldn't happen...and yet there's something about this song that hits all the same.
Written as a sort of tribute to Corey Taylor's estranged father, this is exactly the kind of ballad you could hope for from Slipknot, by having everything toned down in volume but not letting up when it comes to pure pain. Though the amount of pickups might have gone down on this outing, when it comes to the feral darkness in everyone, some things never change for Slipknot, do they?
