10 Metal Cover Songs That Sound Nothing Like The Original
9. Gone Away - Five Finger Death Punch
At the dawn of the 2010's, it was no longer uncool for metal bands to admit their more colorful influences. From the nu metal scene's love for hip hop to the more collaborative spirit happening in the mainstream and beyond, it was as good a time as any to play around and reach for more diverse influences than your predecessors. While Five Finger Death Punch did try their hand at mixing things up, their take on the Offspring's Gone Away had some serious diminishing returns.
Trying to copy the trend of dramatizing a classic song, most of this "performance" comes down to Ivan Moody doing a sultry mock karaoke version of the punk classic while a brooding backing track plays in the background. Though it's up to them to do what they want to with the track, Gone Away was always a song that thrived on an animated vocal performance, which Moody is sooo not in the mood for on this cut.
Comparing this to Dexter Holland's vocal on the proper song is almost like night and day, as Moody just grunts his way to the end of the song and hopes that the rest of his audience will eat it up. While they might have mixed up the formula, the cleaner version of this song is still a mess regardless.
