10 Metal Songs That Are Ridiculously Long
9. Iowa - Slipknot
Anyone who goes into the album Iowa needs to know what to expect beforehand. As Slipknot were starting to get more attuned to what the music business entailed, they were also partying way too hard, and the darkness in their lives made for something pitch black when they entered into the studio. Producer Ross Robinson had pushed them to amplify the scary moments in their songs, and the final track feels like something ripped straight out of a horror movie.
Before Iowa even had life as a Slipknot track, Corey Taylor already knew that this song had to be truly disturbing, describing the music that he was given as being one of the heaviest things he had ever heard. The lyrics don’t let up on the intensity either, as Corey sings about coming across a corpse and doing unbelievably messed up things to it, all while what sounds like the apocalypse goes on in the background. When you hear Taylor screaming at the end, it’s also frighteningly real if you know what’s going on behind the scenes.
To try and make the song even more heavy, Corey pushed himself that much further and decided to strip naked in the control room and proceeded to kick the snot out of himself in the booth as the tape rolled. There are only 2 takes of the song that actually survived, but that’s probably for the best. If they had gone for another one, there’s no telling what kind of shape Corey would be in.
