10 Metal Songs That Are Ridiculously Long
2. Mercyful Fate - Metallica
After being in the spotlight, Metallica never really forgot where they came from. No matter how much money they may have made as one of the biggest metal bands in the world, they were always fans first, and included many covers of their favorite acts in some of their earliest shows. They were now one of the biggest names in music, and they figured that the ‘90s were a good time to return the favor.
Although Garage Inc. isn’t necessarily a core part of the Metallica catalog, it does show you a different side of what they are capable of, from taking chances on classic rock to more gothic sounds like their take on Nick Cave. The biggest piece of the puzzle here is Mercyful Fate, where they pay tribute to one of their musical idols by taking you through a crash course of some of their best material.
While you can hear the same seeds of musicality on their versions of songs like Curse of the Pharaohs or Evil, there’s never a moment that doesn’t feel like Metallica either, as they weave everything together perfectly and kick some of these songs into overdrive. Even if it was meant to be a studio creation, you can easily see Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield working something like this out in their garage, taking some of their favorite riffs and going berserk. This might be more of a Metallica song in sound and scope, but this is also a good way for casual metal fans to get into one of the most overlooked bands of the pre thrash days.
