10 Metallica Songs That Have Been Played The Most Live

7. Sad But True - 1,385 Times

The second song off 1991's Metallica (also known as the Black Album) in a row is the total opposite of Nothing Else Matters.

Whilst that song is slow, thoughtful, and considered, Sad but True wastes no time going for the jugular, opening with a thumping riff before going all quiet again, then bursting into life once more.

Fans could first buy this track as a single nearly two years after the Black Album had come out, which goes to show how popular that record was at the time. The hardcore fans had heard the song thousands of times by that point, which might explain why the single flopped, but this did little to damage the song's reputation.

A perfect stadium metal anthem, Sad but True has been played 1,385 times in the flesh, with audiences filling those aforementioned silences with feral whooping and cheering.

Sad but True is a beast of a tune; no questions asked, chest-beating, ultra-macho rock at its finest. Whether for singing along to those classic Metallica triplets, revelling in Ulrich's drumming, or frothing at the mouth over Kirk Hammett's amazing guitar solo, this is a song that has to be experienced live.
