10 More Bands Who Had Huge Potential (But Wasted It)

6. Altar Of Plagues

Ireland is not a country known for its black metal output, but the scene does exist and, at one point, it was home to this band called Altar of Plagues.

They were around from 2006 to 2013, releasing three studio albums in that time. Album number three, Teethed Glory and Injury, was a critical smash, appearing in several year-end lists of the best music of 2013. It even found its way onto Anthony Fantano’s Best Albums of the 2010s list. Now that’s high praise.

Not even the Internet’s Busiest Music Nerd could save this band from going under, as they announced their breakup in the very same year as their most successful record. The decision to split had actually been made before Teethed Glory and Injury had even been written, but it still came as a shock to their legions of fans.

What should really have been a launching pad for this young band actually turned out to be their swansong, which is honestly not a bad way to go out. It would have been nice if there had been some warning, but such is life.
