10 More Perfect Grunge Albums With No Bad Songs
4. Citizen: Everybody Is Going To Heaven (2015)
The second studio album from Citizen was an exercise in '90s alt-rock revivalism. It was unfairly ignored by critics, but make no mistake it is worth your attention. If you've been yearning to find a more recent group still carrying the grunge torch then this is for you.
The album carries the brooding ethos of Alice In Chains, and the fiery intensity of Stone Temple Pilots, but they're coming at the genre from a very different angle. More often than not tracks build into intensely evocative climaxes, rather than coming in hard and fast from the get go. Drive Into My Sun, is an uneasy by melodic number, that strays into the realms of early Smashing Pumpkins. Ten pulls from industrial groups like Nine Inch Nails, with rage filled screams, punctuated by whispered musings of despair.
Since this record, Citizen have released two more albums, both of which have seen them develop their sound even further. It's worth checking out their whole back catalogue but I recommend you start with this.
