10 More Songs That Are Huge Outliers On Rock Albums

5. Song 2 - Blur (Blur)

Even if you don’t know its name, you have definitely heard Song 2 by Blur.

It’s the one with the big WOO-OOHs.

It was aptly featured as the second song on the band’s self-titled release from 1997 and, amazingly, it peaked at number two in the UK singles charts. It was also a hit in America, which was unusual for a Britpop band, and still enjoys a great deal of success today.

Which is funny because, originally, it was written as a joke.

The whole of the album was Blur attempting to send-up the US rock scene, and Song 2 was their tongue-in-cheek take on grunge. As a result, it was written and performed completely differently to their other songs, even the ones on the same album.

It’s the heaviest song on the record (and in Blur’s entire discography for that matter) by far and, were it not as popular as it is, it might have gone down as a massive mistake.

Thankfully, the quality of the song and the intentionally spoofy nature of its creation spared it from the fate of other number twos - being flushed.
