10 Most Ambitious Rock Albums Ever Made
2. In Your Honor - Foo Fighters
You can pretty much count on any Foo Fighters release to be of a particular high standard. Ever since Dave Grohl started the band after the demise of Nirvana, every single track has been the perfect mix of hard rock bombast and classic rock tunefulness. There's absolutely nothing wrong with mainstream rock when it's done this well, but Grohl used In Your Honor as an opportunity to experiment.
For most of the album's runtime, the songs sound even more grandiose, with all of the amps boosted to 11 on tracks like "No Way Back" and "Best Of You." However, that's only the first disc. As the band's only double album release, the back half of the track listing is actually comprised of acoustic cuts, which are some of the most delicate compositions Grohl has ever written.
From the soothing aura of "On the Mend" to the touching tribute to Kurt Cobain on "Friend of a Friend," the second disc is where you get to the more moody side of the band's playing. With a seemless balance of ragers and slow burns, In Your Honor is one Foos record that has a little something for everyone. Some fans may call it bloated, but Grohl managed to capture both of his artistic identities here on one album.
