10 Most Controversial Music Videos Ever

4. Serge & Charlotte Gainsborough - Lemon Incest

They say sex sells, so when you’ve got duo singing about a passionate but forbidden love, the man naked from the waist up, the woman wearing just a shirt and panties, surely that ticks most of the boxes, right?

The issue is that the ‘woman’ in question was actually only thirteen, and the man she’s singing with, about and to is her own father.

The song is essentially skirting around the idea that Serge & Charlotte are in an incestuous, paedophilic relationship, and the video plays right into that. The title of Lemon Incest is a bit more subtle in its native French (it’s a play on ‘lemon zest’), but the video destroys any subtlety.

There is no other way to describe it; it’s a half naked father and barely even teenage daughter lounging in bed singing about a deep but misunderstood love. In what world would this not be controversial?

Serge Gainsborough has been asked about the song many times and always denied any claims of paedophilia or abuse of his daughter. Charlotte has said little else on the track, aside from acknowledging that it was a ‘provocation’ to record such a song.
