10 Most Disturbing Music Videos In Hard Rock
1. One - Metallica
For the longest time, it didn't really feel like Metallica needed to make a music video. I mean, why would they? After making some of the most letter perfect thrash metal in history, they were already growing as organically as possible, selling out stadiums on the strength of their music alone. Though they eventually caved and released a video for One, it stood as the antithesis for every other music video at the time.
Centered around the story Johnny Got His Gun, the video uses bits and pieces of the film to tell the story along with James Hetfield's lyrical narration. Set in an abandoned warehouse with an all black and white background, it almost feels like the band are playing inside the mind of this wounded soldier, being the only semblance of sanity he has left. As the track goes along though, things start to really take that twisted turn.
Once the double bass breakdown kicks in, you start to feel Johnny's mood change from sadness to panic, all while still showing just a guy lying in bed. As the solo plays out at the end, we see our hero slowly fading away, resigning himself to the fact that he will forever be a prisoner in his own mind. They may have compromised to the style of MTV, but One still stands as the ultimate darkness distilled into just a few minutes.
