10 Most Divisive Hard Rock Albums

1. In Through the Out Door - Led Zeppelin

You aren't going to find too many fans of hard rock music who have that much negative to say about Led Zeppelin. Considering the amount of ground they covered in just a decade of being around, hard rock as we know it would have not gone down the sinister direction it did without songs like Stairway to Heaven or Whole Lotta Love. That was the '70s though...'80s Zeppelin tends to be a bit of a different story.

After coming off of a relatively decent album with Presence, In Through the Out Door was the first time that Led Zeppelin felt like they were playing catchup, looking to incorporate more synthesizers into their playing to capitalize on the changing musical landscape. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's definitely a different look than most fans were used to, initially expecting Zep to come out with another helping of bluesy licks.

It also doesn't help that this was the Led Zeppelin album that they had to close things out on, with John Bonham passing away due to alcohol poisoning right before the touring got underway. Although In Through the Out Door sounds like Led Zeppelin were on the verge of something great, it stings that much more when you realize that we'll never find out if they could see it through.
