10 Most Divisive Hard Rock Albums

3. Core - Stone Temple Pilots

At the start of the grunge revolution, it was easy to point out who was a legitimate alternative rock artist and who was a poser. I mean, if you even had a fairweather view of rock music, it was clear why someone like Pearl Jam were on top of the charts and the moodier catch-up being played by Def Leppard wasn't. Every now and again though, you have acts like Stone Temple Pilots who fall somewhere in the middle.

For a band that didn't come from Seattle, the snarl of their first album Core had a lot of fans skeptical as to whether they were joking or not. Although they had an ace in the hole with frontman Scott Weiland, there were just as many detractors for this record as fans, with people complaining that Weiland was glamorizing the soulful sound that Eddie Vedder did naturally.

While some areas of the grunge fanbase still look at STP as posers, there are still some fine moments of rock on this album, from the acoustic layers of Creep to the Zeppelin like thunder that opens up the entire record on Dead and Bloated. Considering these guys weren't supposed to be grunge at all, this is still a kickass little piece of alt rock that doesn't deserve to go unnoticed.
