10 Most Expensive Rock Albums Ever Made

9. A Night At The Opera - Queen (£40,000 In 1975)

In 1975, eight years after The Beatles put out Pepper, another unconventional British rock band spend an inordinate amount of money to make one of the most acclaimed records in history.

Anyone who has seen the film Bohemian Rhapsody will know how seriously Queen took the making of A Night at the Opera. This was the album that the song Bohemian Rhapsody came from, which itself was highly technical undertaking.

When all was said and done, the record cost label EMI £40,000. Adjusted for inflation, that's around £295,000, or £386,000. Although that's less than what The Beatles spent, it was the highest amount ever spent on a record at the time.

Allegedly - remember a lot of this is guesswork.

Queen made use of various modern recording techniques to get A Night at the Opera over the line, including utilising 24-track tape instead of standard issue 16-track.

There were also several instruments on the album that the band had never used before, such as a double bass and a Wurlitzer Electric piano.

All this may have cost a pretty penny, but it all made for a very pretty album.
