10 Most Hated Classic Rock Bands Of All Time
7. Genesis
It might seem strange to put one of the most pivotal prog rock bands in talks of the most reviled acts in rock music. However, the absolute bile that has been thrown at Genesis hasn't spawned from their heyday but from what they did after they earned their prog stripes.
Throughout the 70's, the band created some of the most cinematic prog rock that was ever laid to tape, with Peter Gabriel's amazing voice and captivating stage antics. Though this version of the band has been looked at with rose-colored glasses, the exact opposite came to pass once Gabriel left the group. After Phil Collins stepped up from behind the kit to sing lead vocals, the praise the band was used to had turned into outright scorn and ridicule from the hardcore fans.
To this day, Genesis fans still have an ongoing debate over who's the "true" Genesis fan based on which frontman they prefer. While Collins' iteration of the band took them to the top of the pop charts, the actual music never suffered for it, with each song feeling like a natural extension of the band's sound. Even if the song's were still great, that didn't stop many fans from abandoning their favorite band for more complicated acts.
