Not every artist making music today is exactly meant to be played all over the radio. Being descendants of the more outlandish forms of art rock, these artists use their music less as an artful expression and more like an open canvas to spew all of their sonic weirdness across. Though you may think you've heard the height of weird with someone like Frank Zappa, you have not lived until you've gotten a dose of Captain Beefheart.

Then again, Trout Mask Replica falls on a unique side of the hilariously bad spectrum. On the merits of a regular rock and roll album, this is already an intense sit, with songs that sound like every single person is playing a totally different song at one time. That's the point though. Looking to stretch the boundaries of what art rock could be, Beefheart actually rehearsed these songs specifically to sound like this, containing some of the most meme-worthy lyrics like "FAST AND BULBOUS."

For all of its off-kilter weirdness, Trout Mask Replica almost deserves an odd mantle of respect in the rock world for being one of the few albums that defies any description whatsoever. Even though noise rock has existed both before and after this record, this is probably the closest thing you can classify as actual migraine music.
