10 Most Iconic Alternative Rock Albums
4. Tim - The Replacements
By nature, most of the best alternative rock out there has been created for the underdogs. No matter how you slice it, the word alternative is there for a good reason, with most of these artists sticking out like a sore thumb next to the pop-centric stars of their day,. Whereas some bands tend to find their niche on the charts anyway, the Replacements stand as the one band who shouldn't be famous.
And by all accounts...they really weren't, with only some minor TV spots happening over the course of their career. While the songs may not have translated to the mainstream, they created a flawless album with Tim, with songs that embody everything great about the slacker generation. From front to back, this record holds nothing back in terms of the hardships of life, from the punkish pop fury of Hold My Life to the sad dejection at the end with Here Comes a Regular.
Once alt-rock got popular though, the Replacements quickly gained the reputation as your favorite band's favorite band, having fans in everyone from Eddie Vedder to even the members of Blink-182 later down the line. Even though the characters in these songs are down on their luck and hung out to dry, Tim somehow manages to make the slacker generation actually sound intriguing. I mean, we got no heat, working minimum wage, and nowhere to feel at home. Not a bad place to spend the rest of your life.
