10 Most Iconic British Frontmen In Rock Music History

8. Morrissey - The Smiths

Despite his less than savvy opinions on most things, Morrissey is up there with the most recognised and celebrated of British frontmen.

He's become a bit of dichotomy, however, his diehard fans will seem to forgive any and all of his controversial statements, but his undeniable talent for writing lyrics that tap into the social consciousness, makes him irresistible artist.

Much like Morrissey himself, The Smiths cut a strange shape in the British music scene, often juxtaposing the chiming and upbeat guitar melodies of Johnny Marr with the humorous but melancholic lyrics of Morrissey. In many ways the music he created with The Smiths was the precursor to the British indie movement in the early 1990s.

Perhaps the original emo, Morrissey's lyrics were full of disappointment and despair, with frequent references to a better but vague and unspecified past. But, really was Morrissey ever happy? This harkening back to some mythical golden era never really made sense, when, by Morrissey's own admission he had a sad childhood...

Despite the complexities of Morrissey as an individual, there's no denying that there's something about the pompadour sporting (not so) charming man, that keep people coming back for more.
