10 Most Overrated Metal Albums Of The 90s

5. Anthrax - Persistence Of Time (1990)

Getting there ahead of all of their Big Four counterparts for album number 5 were the bratty, skater middle child of the foursome, Anthrax.

Coming off the back of their tepidly-received fourth album 'State of Euphoria', Anthrax decided that is time to drop the skateboards and start getting serious, as 'Persistence...' delves into societal commentary, the need for peace, unity, etc. (the universal symbol of a group of people in their late 20s/early 30s).

Musically, the album shows early signs of the band's sound during their John Bush-fronted era that would come in 2 years time, with less emphasis on full-pelt speed and more-than-subtle nods to a more groove-orientated sound. Lyrically though, it's just the pits.

"In My World" tackles fairly bold and sensitive subject matter with all the charm and nuance of a pencil sharpener, "Discharge" makes me wish I was on the drugs they're singing about, and "H8 Red" is an abomination and should require the entire band to be trialed at The Hague for its name alone.

It says a lot when the best song on the album isn't even one of their own ("Got the Time") and makes the impending John Bush-era all the more refreshing.
