10 Most Overrated Rock Albums Of The '70s
3. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
To some rock fans, this will be nothing short of sacrilege. Like few records of its era, Rumours continues to gain new listeners in younger generations, and the sunny west coast pop with an undercurrent of melancholia is a huge influence on modern stars like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
A flawless record, though, it is not. There’s absolutely some genius on there, particularly Buckingham’s "Second Hand News", McVie’s "You Make Loving Fun", and Nicks’ “Dreams”. Then there are the tracks that have been played to death and beyond, like “Go Your Own Way”, a quality slice of pop that, if we’re being honest, no one ever really needs to hear again.
And some of the other big hits - most notably “The Chain” - were never that good to start with. That song has a good bassline and instrumental middle eight that everyone likes; the rest is skippable. “Don’t Stop” is sugary to the point of being embarrassing.
While Rumours’ quality speaks for itself and continues to draw in new fans for a reason, Fleetwood Mac have done better work, particularly the flawed but fascinating follow up Tusk.
