7. Bakerman - Laid Back

Those of a certain age will fondly remember Bakerman by Danish duo Laid Back, which floated around the charts during 1989 – a delightfully hypnotic and funky mid-tempo offering with multiple hooks. Laid Back, aka John Guldberg (vocals, guitar, bass) and Tim Stahl (vocals, keyboards, drums, bass) actually formed a decade earlier and, in fact, are still going strong.

The artists scored a bigger hit in 1981 with Sunshine Reggae, which reached the number one spot in multiple charts across Europe and became known for it's B-side, White Horse, but Bakerman is the track which concerns us here. Laid Back are also notable for being championed by no less than avant-garde cinema director Lars Von Trier, who directed the memorable video for this song.

Von Trier, whose controversial films include Antichrist, Melancholia and Nymphomaniac, seems like an ill-fit for a band whose music, whilst enjoyable, is pretty decidedly mainstream. Whatever his reasons for taking on the project, Von Trier gave us an endlessly enjoyable video which perfectly complements the music. In it, we see the duo and members of their band, dressed in themed costumes, sky-diving from a plane accompanied by various props. It's a simple, but compelling concept, completely free from conceit, and Von Trier's undeniable eye for visuals works wonders.
