10 Most Revolutionary Rock Music Videos

5. With Or Without You - U2

The Joshua Tree album, released in 1987, was a landmark for Irish band U2, and arguably the point at which they attained superstar status. It remains their best-selling record, and contains three hit singles.

A dark and moody masterpiece, The Joshua Tree is a remarkably cohesive artistic statement which will remind you that, whatever you might think of U2's later stadium-rock leanings, this is a band who, at their best, are capable of some impressive and moving musical statements. To accompany the eerie majesty of With Or Without You, the band needed a suitably artistic visual document.

To achieve this, they turned to relatively unknown (at that time) director Matt Mahurin, who had worked with Peter Gabriel and Joni Mitchell the previous year. Mahurin come up with a stylish, atmospheric piece of lasting impact. Featuring beautifully choreographed shots of the band, interspersed with intriguingly-framed, half-glimpsed figures, the music video for With Or Without You marked a great leap forward for the artform, paving the way for a host of artistically-minded works to come. Mahurin went on to work with such notables as R.E.M., Metallica and Tom Waits.

Fun fact: the nude female model in this video, Morleigh Steinberg, would later marry U2's guitarist, The Edge.
