10 Most Timeless Classic Rock Albums
6. London Calling - The Clash
Punk rock music by nature always sounds fresh. When the sounds of battered guitars and fast tempos started to take over the rock landscape, it was in direct response to the more long-winded sounds of the album rock of the ‘70s. Even though The Clash were a punk band at their very core, London Calling was the one album with a little something for everyone.
Ever since their debut, the Clash had always promoted rebelling against any kind of corporate injustice, and this album feels like the greatest result of that collective mindset. From one track to the next, each song has its own separate character, with tracks like “Brand New Cadillac” being an unhinged rockabilly tune while “Train In Vain” is pure pop rock.
Aside from the other biting tracks on the record, Joe Strummer and co. also fiddle around with everything from ska to reggae to bring an added dimension to their sound. For as much as punk was about attitude, nobody could have seen a punk album with this much sonic depth to it. World music is something that is evergreen, but world music that is done with a punk’s heart is something that makes people move their mind as well as their body.
