10 Most Underrated Band Members
9. Brad Whitford - Aerosmith
Whenever Aerosmith are brought up in hard rock circles, fans line up in droves to sing the praises of Joe Perry. The way his swinging guitar playing meshed with Steven Tyler's stage presence gave the band two frontmen for the price of one. The star power of both men shone so bright that Brad Whitford seems to fall by the wayside.
While Perry's lead guitar style is beyond excellent, Whitford's soloing techniques display a much greater sonic palette than his partner in crime. Even Perry himself would go so far as to call Whitford the better guitar player, whose breaks on songs like "One Way Street" feel both carefully composed and off-the-cuff all at the same time.
Many of Aerosmith's hits in their heyday feature Whitford on lead guitar when you'd probably suspect Perry's handiwork. Songs like "Last Child" and "Back in The Saddle" are some of Whitford's most notable guitar showcases, though the critics at the time credited Perry for the lead work more often than not. To this day, Whitford seems content to fly under the radar and fill out the guitar sound of the band, but the world is sincerely missing out on one of the best kept secrets in American rock and roll.
