10 Most Underrated Band Members
5. Ace Frehley - KISS
KISS' run in the 70's remains one of the most impressive periods in hard rock history. While there may have been a lot about KISS that seemed corny at the outset, the music inside the vinyl always was able to tear your head off. Many people tend to single out Gene Simmons or Paul Stanley as the main forces behind the group, but Ace Frehley was what really made KISS a legendary force.
Rather than just being another flashy guitar player, Frehley's approach to solos would have some of the best melodic sensibilities, as if he was trying to sing through his guitar. Some of the band's heaviest riffs in their early days also came from Frehley's amplifiers, from the start of the song "Parasite" to the rough and tumble raggedness of "Cold Gin." Due to his shyness, Frehley never stepped up to the mic until the band's later years, when songs like "Shock Me" introduced another dimension to the band's sonic assault.
Though many great guitarists have come through the ranks, Ace Frehley's unique touch on his Les Paul has never been truly equaled by any of his replacements. He may have been playing the role of a Spaceman, but the music generated by Ace Frehley did truly seem to come from another planet.
