10 Most Underrated David Bowie Albums
4. Space Oddity
There's pretty much nothing more that needs to be said about Space Oddity. Ever since its initial creation in the late '60s, this one track has been a fixture in Bowie's catalog, with every other second feeling like a major space trek taking place. While the song itself has been heralded as a classic, it's about time the rest of its accompanying album got a fair shake as well.
Granted, there is a clear connection between the music on here and on Bowie's proper debut album, which has been heralded as so awful that Bowie himself doesn't like to include it in his proper discography. Though you may be able to tell that this is the same musician, the more folksy songs on here are much more refined on this outing, as Bowie comes into his element as a great songwriter. While there are a few songs like God Knows I'm Good which feel a bit too poppy, the more beefy cuts like Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed givs us a glimpse at the major rock force that Space Oddity only hinted at.
Also, the inclusion of the 9 minute Cygnet Committee proved that even when Bowie dragged out his song lengths to mammoth proportions, he could still keep it engaging until the end. Though there were a lot more interesting efforts to follow, this album is worth so much more than its diamond-encrusted title track.
