10 Most Underrated David Bowie Songs
5. The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell (1999)
With the new millennium approaching, Bowie found himself at somewhat of a crossroads. He was far removed from the sure fire critical and commercial darling that had been the case for long periods of his career. If anything, he was never less relevant. His output was, for the most part, still engaging, and remains underrated to this day. However, the contemporary reaction to his new material was attracting diminishing returns.
Tucked away in 'hours...', his final album of the twentieth century, was The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell. Having spent the majority of the decade emulating the youthful acts of the era, here Bowie offers a pastiche of his seventies heyday.
By taking his formula from the seventies, modernising it, and adding a grunge element, Bowie came up with this nifty rocker that takes its name from The Stooges song Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell.
Not a classic in the Bowie repetoire, The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell is a guitar driven anthem that is dripping in nostalgia. It was the sort of track that he had, in the years preceding the album, been reluctant to do. Sometimes, as he would discover in his final years, there is no harm in looking back.
