10 Most Underrated Drummers In Rock
5. Eric Carr - KISS
So much attention has surrounded the core lineup of KISS that it's practically a part of rock and roll folklore. Even though Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have gone through several different iterations of the make-up clad badasses from the '70s, some people still can't come to terms with these guys without Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Aside from the core lineup though, the real muscle behind the band came when Eric Carr got behind the drum throne.
Granted, Carr didn't have the smoothest transition into his role, with his first appearance being the misguided concept album Music from the Elder. On the other hand, Carr made his mark on every single one of the group's records in the '80s starting with Creatures of the Night. As opposed to the jazz drumming you would normally get with Criss, Carr's drums felt like the sound of thunder providing the beat, almost like he was trying to steer the band back into their original heavy direction.
Far from just being a drummer, Carr also had the perfect husky vocal timbre in his voice to match Criss' intensity, which paid off in spades when they performed songs like Black Diamond live on stage. While KISS has always been about Stanley and Simmons, Eric Carr might be the one reason why these glam rock superheroes actually survived the '80s.
