10 Most Underrated Drummers Of All Time
8. Larry Mullen Jr. - U2
It's hard to really consider the idea of U2 being underrated by any stretch of the imagination. Given the amount of lip service that Bono has had over the years as one of the saviors of rock and roll, there are probably people who would prefer to take an axe to their speakers rather than listen to another U2 track. Despite the stadium sounding vocals of Bono or even the Edge's technical wizardry, it's Larry Mullen's drumwork that makes everything really fit together.
Compared to the straight ahead rhythm that you get in stadium sized acts like this, Mullen's work is much more varied than many would give him credit for. As far as his style goes, his rearranging of his kit made for an unstoppable quality to the tom toms, which sound massive on songs like Pride. At the same time, Larry is also one of the few drummers who knows the balance between artificial and mechanical drumming, knowing exactly when to bring in the loops across albums like Achtung Baby.
Even if he's just going over a basic shuffle or backbeat, the amount of punch in his delivery of songs like Bullet the Blue Sky can go toe to toe with the most technical of craftsmen. For as much as you hear their songs on the radio, it might be possible that you've been listening to U2 for the wrong guy after all these years.
