10 Most Underrated Grunge Albums

1. Tiny Music - Stone Temple Pilots

Over the years, the world has slowly started to come around on Stone Temple Pilots. Despite being heralded as some of the kings of alternative rock nowadays, they were treated as the more egregious pariahs of the grunge movement for making the cardinal sin of...not being from Seattle. Though albums like Core do owe a tremendous debt to the more solidified grunge acts, Tiny Music is where things start getting really weird.

While STP had earned their stripes as songwriters on their sophomore smash Purple, Tiny Music is a much different animal, with songs that embrace more glam rock styles as well as punk and even jazzy chord sequences. One minute it will feel like you're listening to the Stooges, and then you'll be transported into a weird jazz club before bathing in David Bowie pastiches. Even just saying that sounds like a mess, but Tiny Music somehow manages to pull off said balancing act.

Compared to the other set rules for what grunge is supposed to be, this was probably the best move STP could have made: making something different than their contemporaries while still staying rooted in what is true to them. Whereas other grunge albums tend to follow a specific formula, this is like the moment when grunge transformed into alternative rock.
